Favorite Book and Author

Reading is a pastime enjoyed by many, people all about the world read. Whether it be a novel, a magazine, or a comic book, reading is popular worldwide. I, for one, do not often read and when I do I am very choosy when it comes to whatever it is I am reading. I have read books before, though. My favorite book is probably ‘1984’ by George Orwell which is about the author’s perception of what the year 1984 would be like for it was published in 1949. The world that Orwell portrays consists of people living in very bland homes, all of which are extremely similar, and they all have tight work schedules under the government’s three divisions. These people are tracked and monitored at all times and have to abide by strict laws centering mostly around acts of treason. They would get arrested for simply having thoughts that were negatively geared toward anything or anyone. It’s these laws that cause me to enjoy the book so much because in a general sense, Orwell’s prediction was quite accurate. While it may have been a couple decades early, today’s society resembles that of Orwell’s. Now, people are always monitored by government officials. Laptops, cellular devices, and other electronics can and are tapped by law enforcement to ensure that we are doing as we are told, just like in 1984. We are also required by law to be certain places at certain times, like school. Skipping school can result in consequences whether it be a fine or detainment in the detention hall. Orwell’s accurate representation of modern society fascinates me and is why I like him and his book, ‘1984,’ so much.
